When they were in your head they were limitless; but when they come out they seem to be no bigger than normal things. But that’s not all. The most important things lie too close to wherever your secret heart is buried; they are clues that could guide your enemies to a prize they would love to steal. It’s hard and painful for you to talk about these things … and then people just look at you strangely. They haven’t understood what you’ve said at all, or why you almost cried while you were saying it.”

- Stephen King, The Body (via larmoyante)

"The supreme question about a work of art is out of how deep a life does it spring."

“The supreme question about a work of art is out of how deep a life does it spring.”

-
-James Joyce, Ulysses

“A document of the famous ‘Fastnacht Festival’, which literally translates to ‘the night before fasting’, a festival celebrated throughout Austria and Switzerland. The annual adornment of masks that are inherently frightening and grotesque stems from the aim of chasing away ‘the spirits of winter away in preparation for the coming spring and new harvest’. The carnival-like festivities stem from both Christian and Pagan traditions.”

CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.”

-
— Brian Eno, A Year With Swollen Appendices (via volumexii)

A New Way to Image Chemical Reactions

In the past two years, I’ve drawn many mechanisms while working through practice problems, mastering the art of drawing hexagons, and spent many lab periods throwing things into flasks, waiting for long periods of time, hoping that the right bonds are breaking and forming <strike>only to nearly have a heart attack during GC analysis when an unknown peak shows up</strike>.

However, I have always wondered what the molecules actually look like before and after a reaction. Well, chemists and physicists at the University of California, Berkeley, have managed to do just this. The “ability to image molecular reactions in this way” will provide a lot more detail about molecules, allowing chemists to get a better look at how they can “fine-tune the reactions to get the products they want.”

Although the goal was to build new graphene nanostructures, Felix Fischer, lead researcher, said the “implications go far beyond just graphene,” giving heterogenous catalysis as an example.

“To understand the chemistry that is actually happening on a catalytic surface, we need a tool that is very selective and tells us which bonds have actually formed and which ones have been broken,” he added. “This technique is unique out there right now for the accuracy with which it gives you structural information. I think it’s groundbreaking.”

Fischer and Michael Crommie, a UC Berkeley professor of physics, used a technique called non-atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM), first used by Gerhard Meyer and his team at IBM Zurich in 2009, which involves probing the surface of the molecule with a fine tip, providing exceptional resolution. Very briefly, to obtain these images, Fischer and Crommie cooled the reaction surface to about 4 K, minimizing the molecules’ movement, used a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) to locate the molecules, imaging a molecule, heating the surface, then cooling the surface again to image the reaction products.

“Sonos Playground Deconstructed is a site-specific installation in the Nam June Paik / HBO Production Lab at the Museum of the Moving Image. It is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Spectacle: The Music Video.

The installation aims to bring minimalist art to life as an immersive music video environment. Inspired by the wall drawings of Sol LeWitt and the room-flooding sound of the Sonos Playbar, Sonos Playground was originally installed in a 250 sq. ft shed at the Sonos Studio at the 2013 SXSW festival. At Museum of the Moving Image, Sonos Playground Deconstructed has re-imagined the experience using five detached walls suspended above a reflective floor.”
